Walking through that Christmas Reference (from the last post)
Whew, it may have been a little early for a reference to Holiday cheer…we haven’t even gone through Halloween, much less Thanksgiving!
How about this, take a walk and notice that you wont get the common cold this fall season. Your nose may cause you a lot of problems – from allergies to tears of joy and woeful sniffles – but if you wanted a way to stay healthy and away from a dry and irritated nose, take a nice walk.
Get out the stroller! It will even be good for you child as well! Here are some hard scientific facts to urge you out the door:
Any sort of aerobic exercise gets the blood flowing and thus releases valuable flows of antibodies and white blood cells. All these aerobic warriors ward off illness and keep your corpus alive and ticking so you can push through the fall chill. Additionally, as exercise raises production of some antibodies, it lowers the development of stress hormones that can suppress the body’s immune system.
Alright so grab a hoodie a stroller and even your dog and its lease and get out there for at least 20 minutes today, you’ll find yourself breaking the friendship with Mr. Suffleupagus!
Jingle-Bell Peppers
The only thing keeping jingle bells away now is the not-so-pleasant transition into colder weather, ushered in by a less than pleasant lake-breeze. :-/
Speaking of bells, did you know that bell peppers are not just one of the most prevalent vegetables in various cousins BUT…they are also some of the most vegetables that you can consume!
It is a low-calorie vegetable and an excellent source of fiber and vitamins A & C. Just throw in some rice and even an egg or two and you’ll be ready to eat a nice full meal.
These little jingles of nutritious joy are quite hardy when it comes to growing in different climates, so don’t be afraid even when the Chicago tundra is in its finest hour, you will still find them in your grocery store.
Oh and just before you sauté them or throw them in a salad, crack a little sliver under your nose and feel a most refreshing little spray that will make your mouth water until the dinner is ready. A little hint for the kids that you may be cooking for…show them how it sprays their face and they just might consider it one of the most healthy finger-foods on the market.
Illinois State Historical Society Centennial Celebration
On Saturday, September 24, 100 organizations employees and their friends joined in celebrating 40 Illinois businesses as they celebrated their centennial achievements.
In the 27th Centennial Celebration event, the Illinois State Historical Society hosted and presented awards at the Executive Mansion in Springfield.

William Furry (right), the Illinois State Historical Society (ISHS) Executive Director, Dr. John Wilhelm (middle), and an ISHS Associate (left) hold the certificate of centennial recognition.
The ISHS did not discriminate against profit margins in this celebration as they awarded every business that had survived through the ever-turbulent last century. The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago is honored to be among the many who say that they have weathered the storm and are still thriving.
IWS looks forward to serving the community for the next 100 years. Come on by for a visit!

Operation: Conception Preparation
In 5 simple steps, you can put yourself on the fast-track to conceiving a healthy child.
1) Eat well! So chances are, you are already taking the advised additional 200-300 calories/day that you should take during pregnancy. Check on that caloric intake and even look into where they’re coming from. The truth is, you don’t want to be eating all that junk food before the baby is even present inside you! A common misconception (pun-intended) is that you must now eat for two people…not the case. Joke all you want and try to get people to cater to you for the next 9 months but there is no need to gorge for two.
2) Loosen the grip and let go of the vices! That’s right, you may want to consider getting a few more moment of shut-eye so that you can go without the daily caffeine fix. But those energy boosters aren’t the only thing to stay away from…alcohol and cigarettes have been proven to have dire effects on every baby’s health. So, get all your partying in before even thinking of making that new addition to the family!
3) Exercise! Well, it may sound like a broken record but exercise is key to all factors of the pregnancy. It works you heart so that it can sustain nearly 2 people, it strengthens your immune system to keep any sickness away, it releases hormones that could relieve stress and lower the chances of depression or any type of anxiety, and…it will greatly assist in getting your body back into the shape you were in before the pregnancy. Check with you doctor of course but do more stretching and amply exercise and you will notice the difference and so will your child.
4) Adding supplements to assist in the goal of a healthy baby. Talk to your doctor to see what additional vitamins and minerals you may want to take to give your body that extra mineral boost.
5) And finally, once you think you have all your ducks in a row and are ready to start trying, stop in with your physician for some precautionary prenatal care. These will line you up with some advice and tests from the experts.
Now with that, get your body in gear and prepare the 9 month apartment complex in your body!

Pioneers in Care; IHCA Convention and Trade Show
Infant Welfare’s head of Medical Records, Debra Reister attended the 61st convention and trade show to share information about what to do if medical records were destroyed.
IHCA (no, not “IH” – “CA”, I did not just sneeze) stands for the Illinois Health Care Association which is an organization comprised of 375 licensed and certified long term care facilities and programs through the state of Illinois.
Their annual conference took place in Peoria, Illinois from Monday, September 12 – Thursday September 15. In attendance were 2200 nurses, administrators, owners of long term care facilities and others. Reister and Greenberg’s presentation
In the wake of a year that rivaled the largest amount of disasters around the world, the Illinois Healthcare Association included a presentation about what to do in the case of lost or damaged medical records. Two of the presenters were Debra Reister and Stanley P. Greenberg. Both had extensive experience in medical records and their unexpected destruction.
There was a large attendance for their presentation in particular and an active Q&A session after they shared information of their experiences gave everyone the bearings to take the steps needed in the case of an emergency. Many of those that attended had never been through a disaster. Now many Illinois healthcare facilities will be pursuing a detailed disaster plan and know exactly where the chips need to lie if disaster should strike.
After the celebration of its own flood and natural disaster, IWS is proud that so much positive could come out of an incident that is far behind them. IWS hopes that in sharing their experiences, others may recover as they did.
Please check your preparedness by looking at the presentation the shared:
