Lindsey: August 11 Employee of the Month

Lindsey has been working with the probation clients a little over a year now. She has an incredible ability to connect with young men and women who couldn’t be more different than her.

The individuals she works with confront challenging and potentially harmful circumstances each day. They all come to love and cherish the refuge and guidance that she provides.

On a daily basis Lindsey drives to meet these kids in their neighborhoods-either at their schools or local libraries or wherever she could find a quiet space (mostly on the south side of Chicago). She sits with them and asks them about their lives, who they are, what they’ve been through and their hopes and dreams. She listens.

As you can imagine for most of these kids it’s also the first time that anyone has ever told them that they are good at anything. She buys them books or plays therapeutic games with them and offers them a glimpse of a world where things can be better and different. These are kids that society just writes off but not Lindsey. They told her that she had mattered to them- that she was like a sister.

Lindsey battles traffic to drive into these tough neighborhoods to meet with the next one and then the next. Even though this is extremely draining and emotional work Lindsey gets up the next day and does it again because she genuinely cares about these kids. She looks past the rough exteriors (tattoos, hard looks, and piercings) and sees the positives in them and it makes a difference.

Lindsey is a brave young woman and an amazing clinician. Truly an amazing testimony to the work that Infant Welfare does on a day to day basis. We thank you Lindsey.

CHASEing success

During the month of June and July, Facebook users were asked to vote for organizations on a list of over 200. All users who were friends of Chase could vote for Infant Welfare or any other organization. Members of the Auxiliary entered the Infant Welfare Society and worked to garner enough voters to participate. Here is what happened:

The top 100 vote getters were awarded $25K each and selected to go onto the next round of voting. The winner of the final round was awarded $500K and champion of the Chase Facebook Challenge!

Alderman Rey Colón – IWS advisory board member – along with the members of IWS Auxiliary Lynette Paulson, Rosanne Merrill, and Kate Peot, and the IWS Executive Director John Wilhelm accepting a check for $25,000 in a brief ceremony on August 25th

Infant Welfare was among the top 100 at the end of the first round – Wooo Hoooo!
So, Dr. Wilhelm – the Executive Officer of IWS – was presented the check for $25,000 on Thursday, August 25.

We were brought to the next round but with strong competition, IWS fell but hopes to give any social network another go soon! Stay tuned for when you can help out again!

Upright Position

There may be some value in heeding the voice of our mentors to sit up straight and not to slouch…

Studies have shown that maintaining good posture may relieve pain and help people through tense situations. Standing – or sitting up straighter – helps to release just enough testosterone to aid in that pain relief you desire before resorting to pain medications. Outside of general pain relief, if you’re experiencing abdominal pain, curling up in a ball is the worst thing for you to do. Increase oxygen and blood flow to your stomach is ideal to get your digestive system working to improve your abdominal woes.

In addition to post-operation and bowel relief, pain relief, you may want to consider realigning your stance during a tense conversation to ensure that you have the upper-hand. By standing up straighter, it is not just the people around you that recognize the determination in you but you also have a renewed feeling of confidence within yourself.

All this can be backed by the statement made by a 1981 Nobel Prize winner, Roger Wolcott Sperry:

“Better than 90 percent of the brain’s output is directed towards maintaining your body in its gravitational field. Therefore, the less energy one spends on posture, the more energy is available for healing, digestion, and critical thinking.”

Maybe our grade-school teachers really were onto something besides badgering students to stop slouching in our chairs…

Exercise for bone health

“Drink your milk!” -anonymous mother’s around the world

Yes, calcium intake and good nutrition are essential to a healthy skeletal structure but even milk needs some assistance. Here are some exercises you can do to assist in the goal of a healthy body:

1) Do some weight bearing exercises. Meaning walk, climb stairs, or dance for at least 45 minutes.

2) Lift some heavy objects – in accordance with your ability. Do some squats or lunges or just a little weight on the weight machine.

3) Stretch. Weather it be in a classroom setting – such as yoga, Pilates, tai chi or the like.

In making your own cocktail of these three exercises daily throughout the week, sticks and stones will never break your bones.

Be the Scottie Pippen to that Micheal Jordan-sized glass of milk.
